Plan projector brightness outdoors by understanding ambient light, image area, screen gain and why screen size changes perceived brightness.
Outdoor projection is less about finding one magic lumen number and more about controlling the variables that dilute the image.
Darkness is the biggest lever
No portable screen can reject the sky. Waiting until after sunset usually improves perceived contrast more dramatically than a modest screen-spec change.
Image size spreads light
When you enlarge the image, the projector's light is distributed over more square area. Moving from 100 inches to 150 or 200 inches is not a small brightness change.
Gain can help within limits
A 1.3-gain surface is designed to return more light toward viewers than a 1.0 reference, but it cannot compensate indefinitely for a dim projector or early-evening ambient light.
Avoid chasing peak numbers alone
Projector light-output specifications use different standards and conditions. Use the manufacturer's measured standard where possible and compare like with like.
