Projector Screen Gain Explained: What 1.0 vs 1.3 Means
Understand projector-screen gain, brightness, viewing angle and why a 1.3-gain outdoor screen does not replace a brighter projector.
Screen gain is a reflectivity ratio relative to a reference. It is one of the most misunderstood specifications in projection because it is often treated as a simple brightness multiplier without considering directionality or viewing conditions.
What a higher number means
All else equal, a 1.3-gain surface is intended to direct more reflected light toward a reference viewing direction than a 1.0-gain surface. It does not create light; it redistributes the projector's light.
Gain and viewing angle tradeoffs
As surfaces become more directional, brightness can fall more quickly off axis. That is why gain should be read together with the manufacturer's viewing-angle specification.
Outdoor reality
At night, a moderate increase in screen reflectivity can help perceived punch. Before twilight, ambient light is often dominant enough that projector brightness and timing matter far more.
